From Grief to Gladness
Hello, I am Dr Erika Epps a.k.a. Dr. E. Just like you, I have known the experience of being a daddy's girl, feeling like a had the greatest hero known to live, and feelings of abandonment too. He was my dad, Clarence Wardell. Epps. We experienced together many different stages of our father and daughter relationship including estrangement, but what I remember the most now is that he has been lost to me in death. My dad passed away December 18, 2020. I did not know how that early morning phone call would change my earthly life forever. I am no longer a daughter, and I do not have a dad. I was plunged into this unknown thing called GRIEF!
Grief was a journey of many emotional feelings, cognitive distress, and navigating living within that context. What? Living when I feel like emotions were my worst enemy? I have cried, screamed, been angry, numb, and full of love. Grief is unseen yet it is powerfully felt.
Here is a photo of my dad and I on a beautiful sunny day in Antioch, California, which was the last time I saw him in person. We are in the outside area at his dementia facility and the sun was warm. He was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, and it was a seven-year process of decline. This photo represents a beautiful day of love, presence, and fluid memory. This day was a gift to me to embrace for the final time the dad I knew loved me and knew me in those moments. Precious and priceless!
